ISLA Moving Forward
It has been a busy summer for the ISLA Team. The State Board of Education approved our request to open in 2017. We now have a good lead on a building located on North Pacific Avenue just below West Glenoaks Boulevard. We are continuing to work to secure the building and make plans to transform the building into a school by next Fall. However, ISLA will be making a Proposition 39 (facilities with GUSD) request as a backup plan. To make sure the backup facilities are adequate to accommodate all of our applicants.
We’ve also updated our look! A big thanks to volunteer, Jesse Rodriguez, for our brand new logo!
We received a start up grant from the State of California so we can begin purchasing books and materials. We also received a generous donation of materials for teachers and library books from Fondazione Italia, a California 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1998 for the purpose of promoting the teaching of the Italian language and culture in Southern California.
We met with representatives from the Central Agency of German Schools Abroad (Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen, ZfA) for assistance in recruiting teachers and obtaining books and other resources. But there is more work to do in order to fill the school with students.
- We need volunteers to help deliver flyers to local businesses and preschools, man booths at local cultural events, and host house parties with members of your community.
- We are especially in need of a willing graphic/web designer.
- Are you a teacher who is fluent in one of our target languages? Check out our job postings on Edjoin.
ISLA will be hosting a volunteer meeting in the coming weeks. Please reply to this email if you can help us out.
